About the exam
California RBS Alcohol Server Certification Exam
Since July 1, 2022, every alcohol server and manager at an on-premises licensed business in California (bars, restaurants, clubs, tasting rooms, event venues) must hold Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) certification from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). You get it in three steps: register in the ABC RBS Portal, complete an approved RBS training course, then pass the ABC's own online exam within 30 days of finishing training.
The exam is written and administered by ABC, not by your training provider, so it tests the state curriculum in 4 CCR sections 160-174: how alcohol affects the body, checking identification and preventing sales to minors, recognizing and refusing service to obviously intoxicated patrons, California ABC law and licensee responsibilities, and the community impact of over-service, drunk driving and liability.
This bank covers that curriculum section by section, including the April 2026 additions on drink spiking (lids, test kits and unattended drinks) that ABC added to the regulations.

Cost and booking
Fees, where to take it and retakes
Register at the ABC RBS Portal (abc.ca.gov/education/rbs) and pay the $3 fee, which covers the exam. Pick any ABC-approved training provider; courses are online or in person and typically cost between about $8 and $30, set by the provider. The training provider reports your completion to ABC, and the exam then unlocks in your portal account. You must pass within 30 days of completing training.
There is nothing to book: the exam is online, open book and self-paced, and you can take it on a phone. ABC sends results to your training provider, which issues the certification. Employers check it in the portal. Certification lasts three years; ABC emails reminders 90, 60 and 30 days before expiry.

Why people fail
The mistakes that cost people the RBS Alcohol Server Exam
- Running out of attempts, not knowledge. You get three tries within 30 days of training; people who leave it to the last day and fail twice must repeat the course.
- Guessing standard drink sizes and absorption facts. The regulation gives exact figures (12 oz beer, 5 oz wine, 1.5 oz spirits, 8 to 9 oz malt liquor, the liver's fixed pace) and the exam uses them.
- Not knowing which IDs are acceptable under B&P 25660 and what counts as a defense when an ID turns out to be fake.
- Mixing up the rules for 18-to-20-year-old employees: they may serve alcohol only in a bona fide eating place and only as part of serving meals, never behind a bar.
- Skipping the law section. Hours of sale, obviously intoxicated patrons, minors on premises and the licensee's liability make up the largest category on the real exam.
A study plan that works
- Read the ABC RBS regulations text (4 CCR 160-174) once. It is short and it is the exam blueprint; every category in this quiz maps to a section of it.
- Practice one category per sitting here, starting with ABC law and licensee responsibilities, then ID checks, then intoxication signs.
- Memorize the numbers: 0.08 and 0.04 BAC, zero tolerance under 21, 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. no sales, 60 days to certify, 3 years validity, 70 percent to pass.
- Take a full 50-question timed test. Because the real exam is open book, practice finding answers in your provider's study guide quickly rather than memorizing everything.
- Review your starred questions the day you sit the real exam, then take it early in your 30-day window so a retake is never rushed.

50 multiple-choice questions, randomized for each attempt. You need 70 percent (35 correct) to pass and can take up to two hours. The exam is open book.
Is the RBS exam hard to pass?
Most people pass on the first attempt if they completed the training and keep the study guide open. The questions follow the state curriculum closely; the common failures are standard drink sizes, acceptable ID and the law section.
How many times can I take the RBS exam?
Three attempts within 30 days of completing your training. If you fail all three or the 30 days run out, you must take an approved course again and pay another $3 registration fee.
How much does RBS certification cost in California?
ABC charges $3 to register, which includes the exam. Training is sold separately by ABC-approved providers, usually in the $8 to $30 range as of 2026. Employers may pay for it but are not required to.
Who has to have RBS certification?
Anyone who serves alcohol for on-premises consumption at an ABC-licensed business, including bartenders, servers, and the managers who supervise them, plus anyone who checks ID or takes drink orders. New hires have 60 days from their first day to get certified.
How long is California RBS certification valid?
Three years from the date it is issued. To renew you take an approved course and pass the ABC exam again; ABC sends reminders starting 90 days before expiry.
Is this the official ABC exam?
No. These are original practice questions written from the same regulations and statutes the ABC exam is built on. Only ABC gives the real exam, through the RBS Portal.
